Navigate without phone service

Use paper maps, compass, terrain, pacing and conservative turn-back rules instead of following a failing blue dot.

Critical caution: Do not travel merely to search for better reception. In poor visibility, injury, heat or approaching darkness, shelter may be safer than movement.

Outcome
Move only when the route is safer than staying
Survival lens: Field survival favours conservative movement. Prepared instincts mean proving your location repeatedly rather than forcing the landscape to match an assumption.

Before you begin

What you need

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Orient the map. Align map north with compass north, correcting for local magnetic variation when precision matters. Match major terrain features.
  2. Fix the start point. Use at least two known features. If position is uncertain, widen the uncertainty area instead of choosing a convenient guess.
  3. Choose handrails and backstops. Prefer routes beside unmistakable features. Select a feature beyond the destination that will tell you if you have gone too far.
  4. Break the route into legs. For each leg record bearing, distance, expected time, ascent/descent and a catching feature.
  5. Navigate continuously. Keep the map accessible. Compare slope, water, vegetation and junctions as you move. Count pace only as one input.
  6. Stop on mismatch. Return to the last confirmed point if safe. Do not continue hoping the route will make sense later.
