Rumour and information control
Verify reports before scarce resources or people are put at risk.
Critical caution: Urgent action may still be necessary when evidence is incomplete; record assumptions and review them.
- Time
- 5–20 minutes
- Difficulty
- Low
- Outcome
- Prevent unverified information driving dangerous action
Survival lens: Under pressure, confidence can masquerade as truth. The survival discipline is to preserve hope without inventing certainty, and to act on evidence proportional to the consequence.
Before you begin
- Identify the decision the information might change
- Record the exact claim before paraphrasing
- Protect names of vulnerable people
What you need
- Message log
- Clock with timezone
- Radio/source list
- Public correction board
Step-by-step procedure
- Capture the claim. Write the exact words, original source, time, location and how the information reached you.
- Classify the source. Mark direct observation, official instruction, named report, anonymous report, inference or opinion.
- Seek independent confirmation. Use a different channel or observer. Repetition from the same original post is not independent evidence.
- Rate confidence and consequence. Use confirmed, probable, unverified or false. Apply a higher evidence threshold to evacuation, medical, security and resource decisions.
- Take reversible action first. When delay also carries risk, choose steps that protect people without committing all resources to an uncertain claim.
- Correct visibly. Keep the original entry, add the correction and time, and tell the same audience that received the false or outdated information.
How to check it is working
- Source and time are recorded
- Facts are separated from interpretation
- Consequential claims have independent confirmation
- Corrections reach the original audience
Common mistakes
- Treating screenshots as provenance
- Counting repeated rumours as multiple sources
- Deleting the original record
- Waiting for certainty when a reversible safety action is available
