Small solar power system
Match panels, controller, battery and loads without wasting scarce energy.
Critical caution: Do not improvise mains connections, bypass fuses, backfeed a building or work on live conductors.
- Time
- Several hours
- Difficulty
- High
- Outcome
- Supply small essential loads safely and predictably
Survival lens: Back-to-basics does not mean rejecting technology. It means choosing modular, repairable technology and matching energy production to truly essential work.
Before you begin
- Use qualified electrical help where available
- Keep the system low-voltage and purpose-built
- Never connect to household wiring by improvisation
What you need
- Load meter or device specifications
- Solar panel
- Compatible controller and battery
- Correct fuses and cable
- Multimeter used by a competent person
Step-by-step procedure
- Measure demand. For each load multiply watts by hours used per day. Add conversion losses and startup surge where relevant.
- Reduce before sizing. Replace lighting with LEDs, use DC charging, schedule loads for daylight and eliminate standby use.
- Match components. Panel voltage/current, controller, battery chemistry, charger, inverter and cable must be compatible and correctly rated.
- Protect every circuit. Place correctly sized fuses or breakers near energy sources. Protect cables from abrasion, water and heat.
- Set an energy budget. Reserve power for medical equipment, communications, water and lighting. Publish daily watt-hour limits.
- Inspect and maintain. Check connections, corrosion, battery temperature, panel shading and actual yield. Keep a fault and maintenance log.
How to check it is working
- Daily generation exceeds essential demand in poor expected conditions
- Fuses protect the cable—not just the appliance
- Battery charging profile is correct
- No exposed conductors or improvised mains connections
Common mistakes
- Sizing from panel watts alone
- Running an inverter continuously for small DC loads
- Mixing battery chemistries or chargers
- Backfeeding a house through an outlet
