Build a repairable hand-tool system

Create a compact workshop that still functions when batteries, suppliers and specialist parts disappear.

Critical caution: Wear task-appropriate eye, hearing, hand and respiratory protection. Do not use damaged striking tools, cracked handles or improvised electrical repairs.

Maintain essential capability without power tools or supply chains
Survival lens: Gehring’s Back to Basics treats tools as productive infrastructure. A smaller set that can be sharpened, repaired and taught is more resilient than a shed of incompatible gadgets.

Before you begin

What you need

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Map essential jobs. List the recurring work: water repairs, shelter, food production, clothing, cooking, transport and electrical diagnosis by competent people.
  2. Choose manual equivalents. For each critical powered tool, identify a hand tool that can complete the minimum task.
  3. Standardise. Prefer common fasteners, blade sizes, hose fittings and measurement systems. Label non-obvious sizes.
  4. Maintain after use. Clean, dry, lightly protect metal where appropriate, sharpen correctly and repair handles before storage.
  5. Manage consumables. Set minimum stock for blades, files, drill bits, cordage, thread, wire, tape, lubricants and fasteners.
  6. Train safely. Demonstrate stance, work holding, cutting direction and PPE. Supervise until competence is shown.
